Abstract
Introduction: Along with the growth of the aging population and profound social, economic, and cultural changes, it is essential to study the understanding of the elderly about their dignity and self- esteem. Therefore, this study is conducted to determine the correlation between perceived dignity and self-esteem among the elderly in Sirjan.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted among 374 patients referring to Sirjan health centers with household records in 2018. Samples were randomly selected from six urban and two rural centers. Data were gathered by Rosenberg Self-Esteem Questionnaire, Jellon Attributed Dignity Scale (JADS), and Social-Demographic Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed by spss18 and descriptive and analytic tests of Spearman correlation coefficient, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis with a significant leve. (p<0/05)
Results: The results showed a significant correlation between mean self-esteem (3.61 ± 0.883) and perceived dignity (3.67 ± 0.444), with the correlation coefficient (0/638).
Conclusion: The results of this study show a direct correlation between self-esteem and perceived dignity. Further, the elderly are shown to be more capable, responsible, and active in social affairs in self-care.
