Evaluation of smoking patterns in cardiac patients in the Shahid Mohamadi hospital of Bandar Abbas in 2011

  Background and Objective: Tobacco smoking is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, which has many complications, but despite the risk factors many people in the community use it. The purpose of this study was to determine the smoking patterns in cardiac patients in the Shahid Mohamadi hospital of Bandar Abbas in 2011.   Material and Methods: In this descriptive and cross-sectional study, 200 patients admitted to the hospital in the first 3 months of 2011 were studied. The data gathering tool was a questionnaire . Data were analyzed using software SPSS13 and statistical tests.   Results: The results showed that 54% of patients were male and 32% used tobacco out of these 41.2% were cigarette smokers. Fifty two point nine percent used hookah and 5.9% used both hookah and cigarettes. Overall, 57.1% of cigarette smokers used more than a pack of cigarettes in a day and 75% of people used hookah more than two times a day. Sixteen percent of the participants indicated using tobacco for fun.   Conclusion: Many cardiac patients use tobacco in the form of cigarette smoking and hookah. Although many complications of tobacco smoking is not yet determined, educational programs should be implemented in order to the culture and attitude about tobacco use in the community.   Keywords: Bandar Abbas, Cardiac disease, Consumption, Risk factors, Tobacco use.
