The Effects of Oral Fennel Extract on the Intensity of Menstrual Bleeding in Relieving Dysmenorrheal: A Randomized Clinical Trial

  Introduction: Fennel is one of the plants which have traditionally been used to treat menstrual pain, but the impact of the plant on the amount of menstrual bleeding has been reported differently. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oral fennel drop in bleeding intensity and menstrual pattern in students with primary dysmenorrheal.   Material and Methods: This randomized clinical trial study was performed on 29 participants (intervention group) and 30 (control group). Informed consent was obtained from each participant. Severity of menstrual bleeding was assessed by counting the number of pads and Pictorial Blood Assessment Chart (PBA). Data was analyzed using SPSS software version 16. Also, statistical tests like Mann Witney and paired t test and independent t test was used of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant difference.   Results: The results of the study indicated no significant statistical difference between the amount and the intensity of menstrual bleeding in the intervention group before and after the intervention.   Conclusion : Based on the results of the study using fennel extract has no significant impact on menstrual bleeding, but can be used to relieve moderate bleeding and menstrual pain .
