The Effect of a Group Training Package based on Family Communication Patterns on Test Anxiety in First-Year High School Students

Abstract
Introduction: Test anxiety is a common phenomenon among students and is one of the common problems in the educational system that has a detrimental effect on performance as well as physical and mental health of individuals. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a group training package based on family communication patterns on test anxiety in first-year high school.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a semi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group and a three-month follow-up. The statistical population included all male students in the first year of high school in Kermanshah in the academic year 2021-2022, (N= 6500). of which 30 people were selected as the research sample based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria and by convenience method and were Simple random assigned to experimental and control groups (15 people in either group). The measurement tool in this study was the Aboalghasemi et al. (1996) test anxiety questionnaire. The experimental group underwent 8 sessions (2 sessions per week) of 60 minutes under a training package based on family communication patterns, and the control group did not receive any intervention. Statistical data analysis was performed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA.
Results: The findings showed that test anxiety scores were significant in the experimental group in the pre-test (50.20 ± 3.48) and post-test (40.66 ± 8.40) stages (p= 0/001), and were not significant in the control group in the pre-test (50.00 ± 4.00) and post-test (49.73 ± 4.90) stages (p= 0/280). The results of data analysis showed that after the intervention, the effect of the educational package based on family communication patterns on test anxiety (F=17.673, η=0.387, p<0.001) in first-year high school students was significant, and these positive effects remained stable during the follow-up period.
Conclusion: Considering the effectiveness of the group training package based on family communication patterns on test anxiety, it is recommended that counselors and therapists use this method along with other effective methods to improve test anxiety in first-year high school students.
