Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes is a common chronic disease associated with psychological complications such as depression and anxiety. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of self-training and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in reducing diabetes-related distress among women with type 2 diabetes.
Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 45 women with type 2 diabetes referred to Kasra Hospital in Tehran in 2021 were selected by purposive sampling and randomly assigned to three groups of 15 (two experimental groups and one control group). The self-training group participated in 10 training sessions, and the MBSR group in eight sessions, while the control group received no intervention. The Diabetes Distress Scale was administered at pre-test, post-test, and follow-up stages. Data were analyzed using repeated measures two-way ANOVA.
Results: The results indicated a significant effect of time (F=339.3; p<0.05), interaction of group and time (F=49.8; p<0.05), and group differences (F=121.2; p<0.05). The mean difference in distress scores between post-test and pre-test was 33.9±2.3; between the MBSR and control groups was -37.35±2.59; and between the self-training and control groups was -31.97. There was no significant difference between the two intervention groups (p=0.133).
Conclusion: Both self-training and MBSR interventions were significantly effective in reducing diabetes-related distress, and both methods can be utilized to improve the mental health of women with type 2 diabetes.
