Introduction: Conduct disorder (CD) is characterized by aggressive behaviors and social problems, and if not appropriately treated, it can disrupt identity formation. The present study was conducted in 2022 with the aim of designing and validating an Islamic spirituality therapy (ST) package and assessing its effectiveness on the identity formation of adolescents with CD.
Materials and Methods: In this content analysis and educational trial study, the symptoms of CD were matched with the ten components of ST from Kirkpatrick theory. Relevant verses from the Quran and hadiths were extracted from credible sources corresponding to the ten components of ST. Fourteen specialists in psychology, Quranic sciences, ethics, hadith, and religious studies matched these Quranic verses and hadiths with the components of ST. An educational package was prepared and subsequently validated by experts. The effectiveness of the educational package was then evaluated using a pretest-posttest and follow-up design with a control group on 16 adolescents aged 14-18 with CD in Rafsanjan. For the assessment of identity formation, Ahmad’s Identity Crisis Questionnaire was utilized. The experimental group underwent 13 weekly counseling sessions based on the educational package. The control group didn’t receive any intervention. The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures.
Results: The content validity ratio and content validity index of the educational package were above acceptable thresholds. The mean identity crisis scores of the intervention group significantly decreased after receiving the training (p=0.011).
Conclusion: Islamic ST can effectively have a positive impact on dimensions of identity. This study affirms the importance of culturally-oriented ST in psychological care. Therefore, counselors and psychologists can utilize Islamic ST in their sessions, especially with adolescents.
